I gave the rooms a 4 star as it has an old school charm, felt like I was back in the 50s, some care needs to happen for maintenance as this would make it a 5. Service was good and location was perfect, just hink about parking as this is limited.

Lady behind the bar was lovely and greeted us as soon as we walked in. It's just a little unfortunate about the seating arrangement. Very small space for a bar. But if you want to grab a drink, sit down and chat it's nice if you can find the seats

I love the old heritage building, it's wot I grew up with. Staff are great value & very assisting, well done keep up the good work. Beers & cheers Brenda & the team!!
Location location is a must being a traveller.
Cafes & shops just outside the front door, Ohope beach 10 minutes over the hill & of cos for something a little more relaxing soothing for the body, u can't ignore the Awakeri hot springs!

Lovely meal. Nicely presented. However the person serving was more interested in her phone. She could have been cleaning windows on her down time. They were in need of doing. First impressions are everything.

A bed for the night is of primary importance. A comfortable bed is paramount. I am 5 foot eight, and my feet hung over the end of the bed. Actually is was more of a cot!
A real single bed would have made the difference, maybe a suggestion to management?.

The staff were friendly it had a really good feel about it but there were a few bugs in our room and smelled of mould slightly.. love how there was an upstairs outdoor balcony and how there was an entertainment/lounge room that was nice and warm.
The beds were very comfy thankyou, it's just the taps of the shared bathrooms the women's one were loose and my partner said while he was mid shower the tap fell off and it was really hot and he found it hard to turn off with it coming off.
I would come stay again if the mould smell got removed and the taps were fixed.although everything else was 10/10 we still felt there should be a standard of mould and regular maintenance all round. Otherwise it was a good stay (:

Conveniently located in central Whakatane a short walk to the iSight and the water front. The main beach was a short drive away in the next bay.
Our main room was comfortable and good value, with a TV that worked well though we found the bathroom though clean it was a bit smelly, probably the shower curtain. The hallway lights did shine through from the window above the entry door.
The shared kitchen had everything we needed to be able to cook our own meals and the lounge area very comfortable with couches, armchairs and table's and chair's. There were also a couple of TVs to relax in front of over a drink and some food.

This is an established hotel, so all facilities are old however, it is VERY comfortable and has everything you need ie fully equipped kitchen, choice of bath or shower and complete laundry facilities. The staff are welcoming and endeavour to make your stay enjoyable. The position of the hotel is excellent. I would definitely stay here again.

Albeit the decor being tired, squint a little and the essence of an Irish pub is there to admire and absorb!! The rooms are as basic as any backpackers would offer. Amenities, I.e. laundry, kitchen, lounge etc, we used seamlessly. All in all. I will recall this pub/hotel, fondly. Took lotsa photos.

Found the staff really unwelcoming and rude as soon as we set foot in the bar for dinner.

Understand working in hospo can be hard at times but being that rude to a respectful group looking to eat out on the middle of a roadtrip was a bad experience.

Worst hospo we've experienced in New Zealand on the road trip so far, glad we didn't book to sleep there else we would of not felt comfortable enough after that. the food was the only upside to this experience

Returned here for lunch after a great experience last time in Whakatane.

This time very disappointed - staff sitting outside smoking, had to go search for them for service, no smiles - basically made to feel were being a nuisance.

The food was lovely and the chef was the only pleasant experience.

So, won't be coming back on our next visit.

Beautiful historic hotel with great staff and a lovely Irish pub. The hot water requires a bit of patience, tho.

Great place to put your head down when travelling. Very basic room but everything you need. Very nice single bed. Best sleep in ages. Really friendly staff that let me park my bike in the beer garden at the back. Great food and good beer. Just what a weary traveller needs.

Great food, very nice staff and awesome atmosphere, being able to enjoy our wonderful meals outdoors. Everyone of our group really enjoyed their meals and a couple struggled to finish because of the generous portion. Highly recommended.
