Historic shouldn't mean run down. The place is in terrible condition, changed rooms because the first was cold and rundown with a window that wouldn't close. Next room they showed me, the windows had condensation all over them and air came through the windows. The floor in the hall is uneven with broken floor board and first area they showed me, the lights where out in the hall. 3rd room was ok and was warm, broken towel rail and door to wardrobe cupboard. Honestly would not recommend staying here.

Please don't stay here! This 'hotel' isn't grand at all!!
It leaks has pillows to try & stop water coming in through the windows.
Stay there for 3 nights, no working lift. Had to ask for clean towels.
Our room wasn't clean at all.
Horrible!!!

Disgusting, rundown is an understatement.
Useless staff, no soap in the bathroom, stained, ragged bed spread. We paid before viewing the room, more fool us. We cut our losses and evacuated the Hotel...
A homeless shelter dive.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

A family holiday with 2 kids aged 10 and 3 nothing grand about this place if only I could add photos our room was terrible wall paper coming off walls marks all over curtains ripped floors not clear the tv didn't have working channels. There were stained towels and no hot water in one of our bathrooms or the kitchen. I could go on we would definitely not stay here again.

I thought it would be cool to stay in an old historic hotel but I hated my 3 night experience here. Do not stay here in winter. The hotel is freezing. We had to ask for a heater. We had to clean all the surfaces when we arrived. Very dirty. The internet is awful, the elevator is broken, guest laundry services are out of order and broken windows in the hotel are patched up with pieces of paper/plastic. Everyday after exploring Whanganui I dreaded my return to this place. 3 nights felt like 3 weeks.
The shower was okay though.

Was my regular place to stay when visiting Whanganui. Unfortunately new owners have taken over and the place has gone to the pack. Absolutely no maintenance has been done since the new owners took over and it is now starting to fall apart. Leaking and deteriorating. Sad that such a grand hotel that was beautiful 5yrs ago is now starting to fall apart. It needs a change of ownership before I ever return
In dire need of standard maintenance

DONT STAY HERE.
I was a tour leader for 26 male lawn bowlers who had booked 6 months ago. On arrival, mid January, there were no swipe cards ready for our rooms, and they did not have enough. The lift broke down and 80 to 94 year old men had to walk up 2 floors of stairs, no food available yet they had menus in their rooms. My guess was that the owner is NOT paying his bills, so he can not get supplies. The European man who worked in the bar was very helpful.
WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL AT ALL AT ANY COST.

DON'T STAY HERE. The name is obviously from a previous era, she is far from grand now. The building is lovely but do not be swayed by their website, these photos were obviously from many years ago. I've done some research and it appears new owners took over 2 or 3 years ago. They specialise now in taking in homeless being housed by the local council. The whole place is dirty and in need of major renovation. After one night I moved to a different hotel. Beware they now need 76 hours notice of cancellation before refunding. They only have one member of staff who mans the bar, does reception, answers the phone, delivers room service, and everything else - he was the only positive about this hotel, he was cheerful, informative and works hard. I'll never return and advise others to not bother.

I keep going back to the bar hoping for a better experience, however the service is just not up to standard. It's no fault of the staff, there's just not enough of them. I watched about 15 or 18 people come and go because the bar was unattended. These are patrons wanting to spend money but there's no one to service them unfortunately.

Or maybe its because it was Sunday.

Not a great experience at all. Room needed a deep clean mould in the shower bugs and dust on the window sills. Had to keep asking for toilet paper. Would definently not eat anything from here as another guest saw the kitchen it was appalling! Would be a great old hotel as its central to everything but just needs alot of work and money put into it. Very run down unfortunately

My friend and I were very excited to try out this centrally located hotel in town. We could tell it was a bit older than the outside, but given the recent reviews we gave it a try. It's priced at 66 USD for the night so it was a pretty fair price, more expensive than our previous days however.

After getting him checked in and going to a room we were quickly determined to get out of here. We walked right down immediately after and attempted to get a refund given the aroma and quality of the hotel room. There wasn't even toilet paper in the room.

The hotel refused to refund us and we were pretty upset, however the manager Ajay worked with us to try and help. They couldn't refund us, but he truly worked to try and address all concerns we had. He checked out a few other rooms with us and was very calm and kind even through our frustration. I highly appreciate him and his customer service and is the reason I am not giving a 1 star. It's not his fault the quality of the hotel was poor and again truly tried to help.

The rooms didn't smell great, everything was outdated, our particular room had a balcony that was shared with the neighbors, the room was pretty beat up and just not of high quality. If you don't care about quality this place could definitely work. It was relatively cheap and staff was good, but really wouldn't stay here again given the chance.

Thank you again Ajay for doing your best and I appreciate your kind heart.

If I'm being generous,Barely Adequate
Actually... NOPE, go elsewhere
Clearly the management don't care, so I'm not going to take it out on the staff.
The room felt grubby and had holes all over the walls, these may have originally for paintings but since the only art in the room was just a dollar shop print leaning against the wall, I'm not so sure.
The bathroom was... actually pretty bloody YUK.
I'm hardly finicky (you should see my place) but having black mould growing in the corners (plural) and old fixtures either not working or just removed leaving mountings behind, is really pretty disgusting (it's not hard to pour some bleach around)
Missing bulbs so you can't light the room properly.

Really, perhaps look elsewhere.

I am delighted to say that the staff is very very co-operative at this property. Manager Ajay ,has been very helpful & service oriented. We had some requests made on arrival and our expectations were met with exceptions.keep up great efforts .

A lovely old building, unfortunately now fallen on hard times and quite grubby. Our room was cold (couldnt use the heater) the TV didn't work ( no remote- even after repeated enquiries from the management to sort it) no breakfast- even though it's advertised. Very Fawlty Towers.

Booked this place as it advertised a bar and restaurant with it. Upon arrival we were told they were actually closed, this unfortunately was not the only disappointment of our stay. The service from staff was not friendly. There was a strong musty smell throughout and the sheets on our bed had red stains all over them. (We have photographs of this for reference). This place is in desperate need of a deep clean and a bit of TLC. I would recommend to anyone planning on staying here, to go anywhere else.

A piece of NZ hotel/pub history with the pub(Irish) on the ground floor with rooms on floors above at a reasonable price, walkable to everywhere, lovely service from the guys on reception and bar. The hotel/rooms haven't been modernized which for me was the best part, grand staircase, spacious room, very comfy beds...
