Very good food and service from Black Dog. The resturant environment is clean, calm and pleasant. Usually a good enjoyable experience and we have been there several times. We particularly enjoy the chicken filo.

One of the best experiences I've had in NZ! We last minute asked if they could host a large group of us (29 of us that night, which was a Friday) and they agreed to host us in their back space. I was beyond impressed with the service and food especially for such a ridiculous request. All of us ordered drinks with multiple appetizers and over a dozen steaks. It was all served perfectly cooked at almost the same time and was DELICIOUS! We had seafood chowder, steaks, burgers, and the filo and every one of the dishes was mouth-watering. We were all amazed and unbelievably full and happy. The waitress and manager were friendly and attentive, even with all of the requests. I cannot recommend Black Dog enough.

First try of black dog cafe, quite enjoyed the pancake stack, did have a hot chocolate it had some wicked designs.

Had pancakes they weren't cooked properly. Had soggy berries on top horrible. Didnt eat pancakes. My cup was dirty had to ask for new one. Tables dirty hadn't been wiped. Had to ask where my meal was after 25 minutes. It wasn't busy. Very disappointed it used to be so good. Won't be back

Service was not bad but the chicken burger was very bland nothing made it special. The mushroom sauce on the steak was very salty and almost inedible. Tables were still dusty/ dirty not to mention it looked like the water bottles hadn't been cleaned.

Unpretentious, honest food. The butterscotch cheesecake is one of the best I've ever had. Salmon swam in butter but perfectly cooked. Great service with no rowdies at 6 pm.

Stopped in here after being on a cruise for almost a week and getting top quality meals non stop. Gotta say this place matches any of the dishes we have been served. Surprisingly yummy! Giving this placee 5 stars!

I had the pancakes with berry compote & cream (but switched the cream for yogurt & added maple syrup). I didn't initially expect much but the moment I saw it, I new it would taste great! Usually I'd get perfectly round & evening coloured pancakes which didn't amount to much taste wise but these were the complete opposite. While neither the colour nor shape was perfect, the taste was better than most pancakes I've had. My only complaint is that about 1/3 of one of them was too thick & therefore not as cooked through as I'd have liked but the rest of it made up for this. The berry compote seemed to be from out of a can which isn't ideal but also not too bad. I definitely left with a full stomach. The atmosphere was pretty chill & my only complaint for that was that multiple tables were left with dirty cups, plates & crumbs. Food was also prompt.

Not too sure what the hype about this place is. It was cold inside, 1 of the staff members was not very kind. She burnt my coffee - it was absolutely awful. My partners drink was also not nice. Only had 2 sips and I could not drink anymore. The chips were very oily and not nice. The fish was okay and my partner liked his chicken burger.

Great food and really kid friendly. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were happy. They even offered to make my daughter another drink if she didn't like it! Would definitely recommend.

I feel like you need to specify what you serve in each dish on yr menu board. For eg, I bought a bacon eggs bene. I've always received eggs bene on some sort of bread, but instead my eggs were placed on some sort of fried pumpkin topper. It was not my ideal bacon eggs bene. A pancake stacker was also ordered. Sweet pancakes but not worth its value. Very disappointed. Best thing on the table was a side of fries & the mocha.

Had heard some good things about the Black Dog so went there for dinner with 2 friends last night. Ordered drinks (and they weren't anything sophisticated) and 20 minutes later wondering where they were inquired at the counter...to be told that "the manager hadn't entered them into the computer" (whatever that means)....another 10 minutes on they still hadn't arrived and no advice as to when they would be. Thinking "if they take this long to get our drinks how long will we be waiting for dinner"? We decided to leave and go to Speights Ale House.

The contrast couldn't have been bigger, attentive service as soon as we arrived, staff couldn't have been more helpful. Drinks arrived in minutes. We had a 3 course dinner (food was awesome), which arrived in an appropriate time and the staff couldn't have been more attentive and friendly. We spent over $150 and my friend from Wellington was so impressed he left a good sized tip. So that's what you missed out on Black Dog. I certainly would never go back there until there was a substantial improvement., and I mean substantial! You will be disappointed if you go there.
