Room was very dirty, stains on carpet and door and paint peeling off windowsill. Service and location seemed fine.

Poor food. Waited over 2 hours for our food and parts of the meal were raw. Only 2 staff and there were about 30 people in the restaurant. Would not return

We were here for just over 1 month. The manager was super helpful to us(including my partner and baby daughter) and always said goodmorning.

The room we were given however, was way too small for the 3 of us so it's built more for single people or a couples stay. Oh, and the other thing is that the kitchen is tiny so you'll probably end up purchasing takeaway while there.

Other than that, we are grateful as it provided us with the basic necessities of shelter and amenities.

Staff friendly, room was huge and above entry with view overlooking street.
The hotel has character and the room had been slightly modernised however the old parts are part of its charm. Free parking. Thank you.

Great place. Very clean and tidy.
They even put electric blanket on as I got in late and it was freezing day.
Definitely stay again next time I'm working up that way.

I was a 8 yr old child, way back very early 1960's my little girl friend Christine Mckechnie's parents managed it those days it was called the Commercial hotel, they had stewards, uniform, complete with gloves, so
Amazing, and the big staircase and the brms loved so much the dinning room, starched table cloths, it was grandeur. I just wanted to stay forever. Christine and i were sat in the huge lounge one of the streward would present us with the big tin of Sampler biscuits, and we could choose from that also two lovely glasses of ice lemonade
It was fab because people in Putaruru were not well off, my Dad worked on the railway
My mother worked sewing garments at Waltons
I am so glad the new lady is in the process if restoring it. Oh yes the pub on the side of t jh e hotel, yep 6 o'clock swill.
Great memories we didnt have much but hey we were happy

The hotel building itself is a lovely classic, but hasn't had much attention in recent years - all that wood needs a clean and varnish, and the paint is cheap and peeling off all over the place. Classic fittings are lovely, but not when they're so old they stop working - I had to ask for help with the bathroom door-handle. However, the bed was modern, spotlessly clean, and comfortable, and there was plenty of heat if needed, as well as good light-excluding blinds. Value for money in the parts I really needed.

Definitely one of my favorite hotel experiences. Lovely, helpful staff. Rooms are clean and simple. Communal kitchen and tea area were very useful. We made our own meals for most of our stay. There is a nice restaurant next door and the bar is populated with super friendly locals. If you are looking for a commercial-type posh luxury hotel, maybe this isn't your place. The building is old yet stylish. The place has heaps of character and guests and staff were awesome. We will definitely stay here again if we make it back to Putaruru.
