We visited the pub along with the restaurant and it was really good. The food and the drinks from the bar menu is amazing.

Mulled wine with spices and raisins is a must try during the winter. The chicken and mushroom burgers were good.

The Lamb stew with bread is great combination and a must try as well.

Saw sign out on footpath "Snacks, Coffee, Meals" so decided to give it a try, just coming up to 12 noon. Unfortunately, we walked into the restaurant and were promptly shown out with a "we don't do coffee" and herded through to the bar. Once again we asked if we could have a light lunch, starting with a coffee(due to the cold day). WE WERE REFERRED DOWN THE ROAD, as they don't do coffee!!! I questioned this..... Due to the sign on the footpath. Got the old brush off. No wonder the place was deserted!!! Not much point producing good food?? if paying customers are turned away not once BUT TWICE. We ended up going back to good old Wild Oats in Carterton and spent over $50.

Nice place. Had the stew. Oxo cube taste. Less than a pie of meat. Some carrots and celery. No mash. Just 3 segments of supermarket garlic bread.
Lots of stock left. Drank it like a soup.
Ate when I got home.. oh well. $27 later

I booked a reservation here and dinner , and it was the best meal I've ever had, the customer service was top notch and the location is perfect right on the main road and easy to find. The wine and beer were exquisite and very good value. I would highly recommend coming here, the hotel rooms were nice and clean and toilets/showers too.
I really enjoyed my time here and will definitely come back. Thanks

Oh my!! 1860 restaurant...how amazing were you! You catered for our group of 11, very last minute and I'm so glad you did!
Entrees.....amazing, mains....amazing, desserts...amazing, wines...amazing!! A highlight was definitely the steak. Cooked to perfection and a decent size. We're visiting from Oz, and in complete awe of the steak we were served. Kiwis definite do it better! We had 5 teenagers and young adults amongst our group and they were impressed too. The staff happily catered for all our needs with a smile.
Loved, loved our night.....and can't wait to visit again on our next trip back to NZ. Thank you so much! And so well priced!

The service is great. But it's not so easy for people who have lots of luggage as there is a steep stair. Some rooms are small.

Went here with a group and a set menu of glazed ham, mash potato and chefs seasonal veges for the mains. The ham was really delicious and my favourite part. Would have preferred not to have the gravy on the ham and instead something like apple sauce or pineapple chutney, something with a bit of tartiness to complement the flavor of the ham. The veges and potato were fine, simple but tasty.
The dessert was sticky date pudding with icecream and butterscotch sauce. The pudding was cool, like room temp, rather than warm which was disappointing. And I am thinking the dates were pureed as there were no obvious date pieces in the pudding/cake.
Overall the meal was appropriate for the price.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself is very lovely. It may be an OCD minute between us but we did notice the lights in the room we were dining in were all different heights which was odd. The air con was a definite bonus on a hot Wairarapa day, though as the doors were open it didn't make a huge difference unfortunately.
4 stars cos I felt there were just a few small tweaks to bring the whole meal experience to its full potential.

A fantastic pub with real character. I spent one night here while cycling around NZ and the publican was super accomodating, finding a spot for my bike around the back and then somewhere more secure overnight.
The room was small but to be expected for a building with such history, very comfy and clean bed. Had everything I needed. Thanks!

Lovely, shaded, outside area, below cherry blossom. Kept the Wairarapa sun off our backs, as we sank some cold ones. Useful range of beers, something for everyone.

I've been looking forward to writing this review because we absolutely loved this place! It has everything in the same spot, a pub, accomodation and a restaurant. The bedroom is basic, clean and cosy and decently priced. The pub! Great service and nice locals. The Murphy's beer on tap is quite delicious! And the restaurant, well the food there blew us away! The sharing menu was a breath of fresh air, we couldn't fault anything we were served and there was 2 of us. The meat was cooked nicely and the flavours all worked well. The calamari, wow what a stunner, it was mouth watering and one of the best calamari dishes we've ever eaten! There were only 2 of us and ordered 5 plates to share and a side, could have easily only ordered 3 plates and a side. It was priced reasonably without the drinks we would have most probably spent 70-80 dollars. My husband ordered an Irish coffee and he said it's hands down the best one he's ever had and wanted to give the waiter a rather larger than normal tip in gratitude for the servers recommendation on the scotch and excellent coffee making skills. This is a gem of a place in Greytown and i look forward to visiting again!
