Great food and service on a cold Sunday night. The waitresses were very friendly and informative and if they didn't know something would ask.
As it was our first time dining there we thought we would try all courses. Good luck with that. I had the seafood chowder as a starter, mistake. It is a large very tasty dish full of seafood so stands alone as a main. Next was the steak and veges. Well cooked and tasty. No room for any dessert.
My wife loved her pork belly bites starter but couldn't finish her tasty pasta dish.
We'll be back but on a week day night as it was very loud with a group of very noisy kids who didn't seem to be under any adult supervision. The staff had to keep apologising for the noise to all the other patrons but it wasn't their fault.

Good selection of dishes on the menu. Food came out quickly, was yummy and hot. Good prices too.

Great hotel to stay in Amberley. The room has been reburbished to a high standard and was quiet, clean and warm. A great atmosphere in the Crown and Shepherd Bar. The service and meals were excellent. Will definitely stay again

We stayed here to out of convenience which ended up being an excellent choice. The rooms were very clean and recently remodeled. They did an overhaul from the pictures and made extensive improvements. The customer service was above and beyond helping us decide to stay for the night. The lady showed us the room so we could make our final decision.
Dinner here was exquisite! We had beef roast, chicken curry & seafood chowder. EVERYTHING was delicious. The curry melted in your mouth, the taste of coconut and curry were fantastic. The beef roast was tender, flavorful and fresh. Seafood chowder was creamy and packed with fantastic flavors. Each and every dish made you want to more. We enjoyed the food, customer service, and the ambiance of the whole stay. Thank you everyone for a fantastic evening. We had just wished the restaurant was open for breakfast. However, they have bread, fruit, cereal, coffee, tea, milk, etc in the shared kitchen available.

Quite restful sleep.

Popped in for an early lunch. The staff were lovely, nice to see a staff member with a smile. Food was generous and good. If you are passing through Amberley or staying in the area and want a hearty meal this is the place.

Stayed 1 night. Accomodation is 5 star! Extremely comfortable beds. Beautifully renovated with very good attention to detail (could just do with bedside lights!) Very quiet with presumably double glazing. Had very good meal (curry). Service was excellent.

Certainly above average rural Hotel/Restaurant. Serving local sourced produce. Food was very good. Modern setting. Great outdoor shady seating option. Excellent service. Free parking at the door. Good wine & beer list.

My wife and I have just experienced a wonderful 10 days travelling around the top half of the South Island before returning to West Australia yesterday.
We stopped by for lunch at the much improved Amberly Hotel earlier this week and were advised by staff that there would be a delay in the service due to staff shortages.
It seems that all to many businesses are jumping onto the same bandwagon and using it as an excuse for not being able to provide an acceptable level of service.
Several times during our wait, four and sometimes five staff members could be seen having a chat amongst themselves behind the counter at the back of the café. Obviously nothing was happening at these times to assist in getting meals out to customers or assisting in the kitchen.
After ordering two seafood chowders we were given 2 glasses to use with drinking water. The bottle of water however, I was directed to get from the refrigerator myself soon after the glasses turned up because they were too busy!
When the two chowder dishes (they were fantastic I must add!!) arrived we had to wait even longer and summons another staff member to fetch spoons in order to eat the meal.
A couple of things spring to mind here -
1. If you are short staffed and cannot provide a satisfactory service for your customers, do what many other businesses are doing - put a sign on the door stating 'Closed due to staff shortages', keep the door locked and stay at home until you are able to provide the correct level of service.
2. If staff are incapable of correctly attending to simple tasks, employers must entice older, more experienced employees to work in your business, but make sure they are properly paid. Perhaps employers should be placing more emphasis on training for their employees, both in the workplace and in dedicated training environments where qualifications can be gained.

Brilliant restaurant to eat at with the family. Had an early dinner here with my husband and 10 month old. Food was delicious, wholesome, and came out very quickly. The staff were friendly and accommodating of our baby, seated us in an area with more space for a high chair and close to their kids pay corner with the cutest mini kitchen and a box full of toys. We also picked up some local jam and a bottle of gin in the general store attached to the restaurant.

The food, location and decor are amazing.
There was a slight stuff up in the order... and that is the only reason that the review is not 5 star. The stuff up was corrected with grace and delicacy. Will still be recommending to others, and plan to return for another meal... the menu is worth exploring!

This is for Golden Hat Takeaways. A scoop of chips and combination fried rice.

I'll start with the good... the chips were quite good. Chunky cut, skin on, well cooked, not super salty.

The rice though... $23. $9 more expensive than my usual favourite, which is a significant price difference. Which I wouldn't have minded with it taking half the time for travel but it was just so bad. I did appreciate that it had real cabbage and broccoli rather than frozen mixed veg but there was just no flavour to it and the meat was not great, with the beef being inedible (gristly, tough). The egg bits were nice and chunky though. It just didn't have that yummy fried rice flavour. Staff seemed nice though.

Would like to suggest round tables replace the long ones. Round much nicer for conversation for a group.
Also suggest staff have name tags & introduce themselves to the table they're attending.
Very accommodating for 2 of our group who were on a tight time schedule.
Food very nice. Fingerbowls of water provided for the sticky ribs. One fish meal didn't want chips, would've been good PR to knock a couple of dollars off the price.
But the day we went it was free coffee with lunch. Will go again.

First time visiting since the rebuild. Really like what they've done. Had a few drinks in the bar followed by food. We had the chicken burger, Korean chickin bites and chips.
Food came quite quickly and was very hot. Would definitely visit again.

Beautiful location and atmosphere for celebrations. The staff are super friendly, and always happy with big smiles and went that extra mile for our event small event. Lots of amazing food on offer, with so many menu options. It is certainly my favorite place to go in Amberley.
Great band too, Viking Thunders were epic!

Stayed there recently with a group of mates and was very impressed. Well renovated with comfortable rooms. Had lunch in the bar and dinner in the restaurant. Meals were big city quality and well priced. Great value and delicious.
